“It sounds great for others . . .
But is cohousing really right for me?”

Margaret Critchlow also had her doubts before becoming a founding member of Harbourside Cohousing in Sooke, B.C. , which the CBC Radio has called “a joyful social experiment”.

What would it really be like to live in cohousing?

Let Margaret, who was a Professor of Anthropology at York University for twenty years, guide you to your own answer, as you consider whether to deepen your connection with Victoria Harbour Cohousing.

In this interactive Zoom workshop, you will explore how you can access the creative power of a cohousing community to improve personal quality of life while taking small steps toward creating a more collaborative world. Margaret will draw on examples from other cultures, old-fashioned neighbourhoods, and contemporary cohousing communities (some of which she has helped create). Participants will get an introduction to how to work through differences collaboratively, make decisions well, and find creative solutions that support living well together in cohousing.

What topics and questions will we cover?

  • Take a good look at how and where you live now. What do you want for your future?

  • What is it like to live in cohousing? To develop it? How do you know if it is for you?

  • What skills are needed in cohousing and how to get them? How to collaborate. How to manage boundaries. How to know when you need to consult others before taking action in cohousing and when your initiative will likely be appreciated.

  • Introduction to consensus-based decision-making, communications training, and conflict resolution. Detailed training is provided in separate workshops.
